Leonardo Da Vinci went to Milan in 1483. He was 30 back in the days hence this was the period of time in which he fully reached his human and artistic maturity. This was when the Sforza family lived at their greatest magnificence and splendor thanks to the first ruler and duke Ludovico il Moro. Meeting Ludovico was a great opportunity for Leonardo to enrich his studies, especially arts and scientific experiments. One of Leonardo interest’s was goldsmith. Therefore he starts designing machines in order to manufacture gems and finds a way to “create” artificial gems. In addition, he designs a pendant (probably for some important royal wedding). This is the only known jewel designed by Leonardo The artwork was created between 1485 and 1490 however the pendant was never made. Subsequently, the artwork was taken to England, and became property of the Crown’s Jewels of England. In 1968 during the exhibition at the Christ Churc of Oxford , the work was destroyed by fire. In 2010, in order to celebrate centenary of the jewelry shop “Aldo Citterio, the pendant was finally manufactured. in the heart of Milan, more specifically in via Orefici, 500 years after the sketch was drawn. For sure Leonardo must have walked by the jewelry workshops situated in the center of Milan and close to the Castello Sforzesco and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie!
